Hispanic Heritage Month: Helping Children Discover Language, Culture and Their Roots

Every year, from 15 September to 15 October, Hispanic Heritage Month gives us a wonderful opportunity to introduce our children not only to the Spanish language, but also to the incredible cultures, traditions, music, food and stories behind it.

Because learning Spanish is about much more than learning vocabulary.

It is about discovering a whole world.

Helping children connect with their roots

For many Hispanic and Latino families raising children away from their country of origin, teaching Spanish has a very special meaning.

Of course, we want our children to be able to communicate with grandparents and relatives, but we also want them to understand where they come from.

We want them to know our food, music, expressions, celebrations, family stories and all those little traditions that form part of who we are.

When children understand their roots, the language begins to have a much deeper meaning.

Spanish is no longer simply something that Mum, Dad or their grandparents speak. It becomes a connection to family, identity, memories and heritage.

This can be particularly meaningful for children growing up outside their parents’ or grandparents’ home countries.

A family recipe, a song, a traditional celebration, a story told by Grandma or even a particular word we use at home can become an opportunity to tell our children:

“This is part of your story.”

But Hispanic culture is for everyone

This is something we feel very strongly about at El Recreo Spanish.

You do not need to have Colombian, Mexican, Spanish, Argentinian, Peruvian or any other Hispanic heritage to explore and celebrate Hispanic cultures with your children.

Learning another language is also an opportunity to discover how other people live, celebrate, eat, communicate and see the world.

The Spanish-speaking world is incredibly diverse. Spanish connects communities across many countries, but each one has its own traditions, accents, food, music, history and celebrations.

Children might discover Colombia through its colourful fruits and music, explore Mexican traditions and food, hear the sounds of Argentinian tango, learn about Peru's fascinating history or discover many other Spanish-speaking communities through stories, games and songs.

It is not simply about learning where countries are on a map.

It is about developing curiosity, cultural awareness and respect for others.

Language and culture belong together

This idea has been at the heart of El Recreo Spanish since the beginning.

We don't want children simply memorising lists of colours, numbers and verbs.

We want them to experience Spanish.

That is why we bring music, storytelling, games, art, food, celebrations and traditions into our classes and activities.

When a child sings a song, hears a story from another country, discovers a traditional celebration or learns about a new food, Spanish suddenly has context.

And when language has context, children can create a real connection with it.

How can you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at home?

You don't need to organise anything complicated.

Choose a Spanish-speaking country and find it together on a map. Listen to its music, prepare a traditional recipe, discover a few new Spanish words, read a story or learn about one of its celebrations.

You could simply ask your child:

“Which Spanish-speaking country would you like to discover today?”

And let their curiosity lead the way.

For families with Hispanic or Latino heritage, this can also be a beautiful opportunity to involve grandparents and other relatives.

Ask them about their childhood, the games they played, their favourite foods, the music they listened to or the celebrations they remember.

Those conversations are also an incredibly valuable way of passing culture from one generation to another.

Raising children who are curious about the world 

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month isn't only about looking at our own roots.

It can also be about opening a window into somebody else's.

We want our children to grow up proud of their own stories while also being curious about and respectful of the stories, languages and cultures of others.

Because when we teach a language alongside its culture, we are doing much more than teaching words.

We are helping our children understand a little more of the world around them.
